Research - 1/5 Music Videos

The song i have chosen is Rihanna - Work
This song has a strange narrative.

This video is set in a club where lots of drink is being consumed. We see drake against a wall and Rihanna is grinding on him. This is narrative music video where a story is being told. Rihanna clearly wants drakes attention. A lot of people can relate to this as girls will do anything to grabs a boys attention in a club or a party. This video is very effective because of how people can relate to this narrative music video.

The use of editing in this video can relate a lot to the narrative, there are camera shot where Rihanna is taking up the majority of the shot and drake is in the back. This could mean that in this part of the music video, Rihanna has the majority of control over their potential relationship, Drake is just sitting back and letting the girl take control.

Here we see that the tables have turned and now Drake is in the majority of the shot. This could foreshadow something later on in their potential relationship meaning that at the start the girl had all of the control but now the man has all of the control. The positioning of Rihanna also says a lot, she is kind of sitting/lying down in a strange way, this could mean that she is confused about what is going on right now whilst the man is in control.

Music video styles

Types:
Narrative, performance, concept, thematic and symbolic.

Performance - Performance is basically clips of a live music performance and then the clips are all put together into a compilation. These sort of videos contain the main singers in the music videos. There are lots of different variety of camera shots and angles to get a different view on the music videos themselves.

Narratives - Narrative music videos tell stories about usual day things for example a boy and a girl breaking up, the music video would go through all the different stages of the couples relationship either from when they first met each other or the when they start arguing.
