Digipak Research

Digipak Research
A Digipak is the cd casing and the additional things that come with a cd's and dvd's.

Here is an example of a Digipak.

Digipak's are usually made out of paper, but the cd casing is a firm plastic material. The front of the Digipak usually has a photo of the artist or the group on the front and then on the back its usually the songs.

Usually there is some artwork that comes with the CD's, They usually fold out into a massive poster that customers can put up on to a wall or they can frame it. The problem with having the plastic covering is that it cannot be binned. This is a big environmental problem for the companies as the plastic could be littered everywhere.

My first digipak i researched is Justin Beibers. He is arguably the most popular male solo artist on planet earth right now. Its definitely confirmed that his face would be on the front cover. People that didn't really know him could look at the front cover of the case, recognise his face and then buy the CD's which would generate Bieber and his labels profit more.

The main colours of the artwork are orange in a sightly clouded format. This here could surround Bieber in mystery, and his tracks too. There could be something hiding in the back that we cannot see.

The next digipak I researched was Rihanna:

In a space of 7 years we can see he has produced some music videos for major artists such as: Jay Z, Lady Gaga and has produced Kayne West's music video over 3 times. We can see that he directors hip hop/rap music videos.

The narratives of the rap videos tend to have the sameish story line.

Dave Meyers:
Dave Meyers’s transition from strictly hip-hop videos in the ‘90s to pop hits at the turn of the century made him one of the premiere video directors of the MTV Era. Missy’s “Lose Control” even got him some Grammy gold.

Textual Analysis of Previous Student

Callum Young's blog: http://callumyoungmediaa2.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/digipack-v1-awaiting-changes.html

Strengths:

Callum has taken a different approach when evaluating his music video, he has done a voiceover. This shows that he is using different technology to evaluate his work which the examiner will be very impressed with. He has also written a script for his voiceover to make sure he doesn't mess up and shows that he his very thorough with his work.

Callum has used an original song for his music video, this shows creativity and demonstrates that he was willing to take a risk by using his own song. Also he used combined a narrative and performance video which was very original and he showed this in the video by having the performance aspect of the video in black and white and the narrative part of the video in colour.

Weaknesses:

Callum's digipack lacks some visually appealing colours and characteristics. I think that the fact that they used pencils and paper makes it look a little bit childish which can have a negative impact on the audience.

Difference between mainstream and independent label

Independent record label - These are labels that operate without funding outside major record labels.

Mainstream record label - Is a brand or trademark associated with the marketing of music video. An example of mainstream record labels are: Sony, Universal, EMI.

My chosen song Chelsea Dagger used a mainstream label called "Island Records." Island records is a mainstream record label.

Contracts: There are contractual differences between the different types of the labels. Major labels keep the majority of the money made from the music video, whereas independent record labels pay out a little to their artists.

Artists may want to use independent labels as they can maximise their income rather than choosing the mainstream record labels.

Andrew Goodwin Theory

Music videos will have representations of the genre the song is. For example a grime song may see young males around the streets in large groups dressed in: nike, north face, EA7. With a bottle of Hennesy in their hand, whilst doing gang signs. The music videos could take place around areas such as local neighbourhoods or a block of flats.

There is a relationship between the music and the camerawork. For example in grime music lyrics may be "gang, gang, gang." The visuals would most likely be a group of boys as the lyrics are referring to a gang.

There are a links to TV, radio and other information sources in videos. For example in the song maad city the lyrics go "If Pirus and Crips all got along they'd probably gun me down by the end of this song"

This here shows us that these lyrics are using real life events to tell their song through a narrative.

Pirus and Crips are both gangs in America that have a fierce rivalry that tracks back to the mid 1900's.

Research - 5/5 Music Videos

The fourth music video i have chosen is Justin Bieber - Love Yourself
This song has another romantic narrative.

The video starts off as a woman and man are laying in bed but their backs are turned away from each other. The colour of the shot is black and white. The position of the two people could represent how their relationship is going. This could also foreshadow their relationship, things are going to turn sour.

Then the man turns around and looks at the girl. We can get a clear image that the man wants to sort things out with the girl but she is not interested. The man then has enough and proceeds to turn back around.
The lyrics go "And baby i be moving on" These lyrics show that the man is hiding something. He's acting like he doesn't care, but in reality he does.

This shot then takes place in the kitchen. The mans about to take a bite of his apple then the woman grabs it out of his hand. This here can represent lots of relationships. Girls taking things off the boys and they always expect everything. The director has thought about this very carefully.
